JSE Midday: JSE relatively flat amid thin volumes

The JSE retreated further into the red by midday on Thursday, albeit still relatively flat amid thin volumes and showing gradual loss of demand, according to a local trader.

CURRENT ACCOUNT DEFICIT HITS ITS LOW

The 3Q09 balance of payments data contained little in the way of surprises. The current account balance, at 3.2%, was in line with market expectations - although the 2Q09 deficit was revised up slightly to 3.4% from 3.2% of GDP.

SARB: Q3 rand daily turnover $14.5bn v $14.6bn

SARB: Q3 curr acct dfct -3.2% GDP (exp -3.3%) (2)

South Africa recorded a current account deficit on its balance of payments of -3.2% of GDP in the third quarter of 2009 from a revised -3.4% (-3.2%) in the second, the smallest since the second quarter of 2005 when it was -2.7%, the South African Reserve Bank’s latest Quarterly Bulletin has revealed.

SA mining production falls 8.5% y/y in October

Johannesburg, Dec 10 (I-Net Bridge)   South African mining production fell by 8.5% year-on-year (y/y) in October from -11.3% in September, Statistics South Africa reported on Thursday.
